For the third straight year, head cross country coach Al Carius (photo) was named Midwest Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Head football coach John Thorne was named the CCIW Football Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons. Announcements were made Nov. 16.
Carius guided the top-ranked Cardinals to five meet victories in 2010, including dominating victories at the CCIW Championships and the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. Carius, a member of the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame, has won 13 national titles in cross country during his tenure at North Central along with seven national titles in track and field (five outdoor, two indoor). Thorne, in his ninth season as the Cardinals’ head football coach, was voted the conference’s top coach after leading North Central to a perfect 10-0 regular season and outright possession of the CCIW Championship. The Cardinals have now won or shared the CCIW title in each of the past five seasons. More
