Dec. 15, 2010—Fans of Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and other great rock guitarists are sure to enjoy an exhibit of classic guitars at North Central College.
More than 60 guitars including Fender Stratocasters, Gibson Les Pauls, Flying Vees, Sunbursts, Hollowbodies and other instruments from the collections of Marguerite and Rich Waters of Crystal Lake and Dave Kelsch of Naperville will be displayed Feb. 18 through April 10 in the College’s Schoenherr Art Gallery at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Kelsch is a North Central College trustee and Marguerite Waters is a former dean of admission at the College. The owners of the collections will greet visitors during an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18. Complimentary refreshments will be served.
“Buying guitars quickly moves from a casual hobby to an obsession,” Kelsch says. “I love all of my guitars as musical instruments, but also for their variety of styles and the craftsmanship that goes into building them. They are works of art to behold.”
The Waters’ guitars include instruments autographed by Carlos Santana, B.B. King, Bo Diddley, Eddie Van Halen, Sting, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and members of Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, U2 and The Eagles.
“Music is a big part of our lives and we are huge fans of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands of the past three decades,” Marguerite Waters says. “We have attended concerts by each of the artists and our signed guitar collection is just one way to share the fond memories with our children and friends with the hope that they too will appreciate the greatness and legacy of the bands.”
The opening of the exhibit coincides with a performance by Jason Vieaux, one of America’s leading classical guitarists. The performance begins at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, in North Central College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. Tickets are $25 and $20; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix.
The Guitar Collection exhibit will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. Sundays, and one hour before most performances in the Fine Arts Center. Contact Nickole C. Lanham, North Central’s gallery director, at 630-637-5375 or firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more about the exhibit.
