Feb. 2, 2010--North Central College's Chinese Club will host its annual Chinese New Year Festival from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, in the Harold and Eva White Activities Center, 325 E. Benton Ave., Naperville.
The free event celebrates the Year of the Tiger and will start with the traditional Lion Dance and feature Chinese songs, games and food. Under the tutelage of choreographer and professional dancer Olinda Chang, North Central students have been learning how to perform the Lion Dance, which, according to Chinese tradition, drives away evil spirits and brings good luck in the new year. Chang has taught authentic Chinese dance for more than two decades and performed in several Chicago area festivals.
In addition, North Central students and alumni will sing Chinese songs, including folk and modern rap, and serve Chinese food and tea to guests. There will also be martial arts and meditative Qi-gong sessions, Chinese games and a performance by martial arts experts, the All Star Kung-Fu Group.
The Chinese New Year Festival is sponsored by the Chinese Club and North Central's interdisciplinary studies program and Cultural Events. For more information contact Chinese instructor Annie Liu at 630-637-5263.
This event is one of many ongoing programs hosted at North Central College to enrich and broaden the academic and cultural outlook for the College and community.
