Molly Gstalter, a North Central College junior, has expanded her studying abroad experience during fall term in Heidelberg, Germany, by pursuing an internship. Gstalter is taking classes in German full time at the Heidelberg Universität through the American Junior Year Program, while also interning as an assistant English teacher at Hölderlin Gymnasium, a secondary school in Heidelberg.
Gstalter carries a major in German and minors in secondary education and English language learning at North Central College and is a resident of Skokie, Ill.
In her internship at Gymnasium, Gstalter serves as a mentor and teacher to seventh-grade students who are learning English as a second language. Her role includes creating lesson plans, facilitating lessons each week and also leading discussion groups with students in grades 10 to 13.
“This internship has made my time abroad even more exciting,” Gstalter says. “It has given me the opportunity to incorporate all aspects of my major and minors in ways I didn’t think were possible. Not only am I living in Germany, but I’m also teaching English as a foreign language. Because of my German language studies at North Central, I’ve been given the experience of a lifetime and am able to share what I’ve learned with young people halfway across the world.”
In addition to her internship and studies in Germany, Gstalter participates in local running groups, meets with German-English speaking partners and spends weekends traveling throughout Europe.
