May 16, 2012—Kelly Cox of Plainfield was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in East Asian Studies Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.
Cox is a senior majoring in East Asian studies with a focus in Japanese at North Central College. She is the daughter of Tracy and Terri Cox and a graduate of Plainfield South High School.
Cox says after graduating from North Central College in April 2013 she hopes to pursue a career in which she can utilize her East Asian Studies major in addition to her four languages of study—English, Spanish, Japanese, and Korean.
“I was originally drawn to East Asian music; later I connected with the region’s values of respect and harmony. I also love the sound of the languages,” she says. “I majored in East Asian studies so that I could study more than one country.”
On campus, she’s been active in the Japan Club, Korean Club and Asian Student Konnection. She’s also served on the staff of The Kindling, the campus humor magazine, as well as the North Central Review, the student-run literary journal.
Cox has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her collegiate experience and she has been a dean’s list scholar for each academic term.
