Marcy Thomas was honored with the 2011 Outstanding Major in Studio Art Award and Katherine Hannan was named recipient of the Diane Duvigneaud Senior Art Award during Honors Day May 17 at North Central College.
Thomas is a graduating senior double-majoring in studio art and art history. Hannan is a graduating senior double-majoring in studio art and corporate accounting.
At North Central, Thomas was involved in Students Lost In Pottery (SLIP), the campus pottery club, and exhibited her artwork. The College has three galleries that provide opportunities for students to exhibit their work: Schoenherr Gallery in the Fine Arts Center, the Oesterle Library Gallery and the Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery.
The description for her February 2011 exhibit read, "Through sculpture and ceramics, Marcy Thomas' body of work mainly reflects spiritual questioning, human longing, and the feminine. Her work often has a historical context as well. Her main objective is to change the way the viewer may perceive the stories that they may have been brought up with, and introduce every viewer to new ideas and understandings."
At North Central, Hannan displayed her artwork in multiple exhibits, including a joint exhibit with fellow student Megan Brooks in October 2010. Their works included painting, drawing, printmaking, digital photography, ceramics and sculpture.
“The artwork in this show revolves around places that have played a significant role in our lives,” Brooks and Hannan said in an artists’ statement about the show. “From a grocery store in Paw Paw, Ill. to a ranch in Arizona, our surroundings have inspired us as artists. Though our various locations seem common, our work seeks to glorify them and reflect their importance in our lives.”
