Mary McMahon, North Central College associate professor of mathematics and mathematics education coordinator, co-presented “A Reasoning-Based Approach to the Algebra Strand of the Common Core Standards” for K-12 teachers at the Associated Colleges of Illinois Teacher Induction Academy at Concordia University in River Forest on Sept. 23.
Teachers gained a better understanding of the progression of algebraic reasoning through the grade levels. They saw the vertical integration of the concepts through the development of the activities and appreciated how each grade level enhances the understanding.
McMahon has been on the faculty at North Central since 1986. She received her B.A. from St. John’s University and her M.S. from Queens College of the City University of New York.
