May 21, 2012—Mike Giaquinto of Hackettstown, N.J. was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in Physical Education Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Giaquinto is a senior majoring in physical education with a minor in secondary education. He is the son of Lisa and Frank Giaquinto and a graduate of Warren Hills Regional High School.

Giaquinto played outside linebacker for four years with North Central’s conference championship football team. He has been honored by the National Football Foundation’s Hampshire Honor Society for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better during his four-year career.

In April, despite having no experience as a track and field athlete, he set the North Central College school record for men’s javelin. During his second competitive meet, he threw 198 feet, 11 inches to break the school’s 25-year-old record in javelin. The men’s outdoor track and field team has won 34 conference championships; North Central College is the two-time defending NCAA Division III outdoor champion and reigning NCAA indoor track and field and cross country national champion.
