A North Central College professor will take part in a performance of Haydn’s “The Seven Last Words of Christ” that will be broadcast live March 31 on WFMT-FM 98.7, Chicago’s classical music radio station.

Perry T. Hamalis, assistant professor of religious studies and director of North Central College’s Office of Academic Opportunities, is among eight prominent speakers who will deliver short meditations about Christ’s final words.

The performance of Franz Joseph Haydn’s composition will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, from St. James Cathedral, 65 E. Huron St., Chicago. A pre-concert lecture begins at 7 p.m. The string quartet performance features Rachel Barton Pine and Mathias Tacke on violin, Richard Young on viola and Wendy Warner on cello.

Haydn (1732-1809) was commissioned in 1787 to compose the work for a Good Friday service.

The meditations will be introduced by Dr. Martin E. Marty, religious scholar and professor emeritus at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Hamalis will reflect on the phrase, “Today you will be with me in Paradise,” from Luke 23:43.

Other speakers are Rabbi Peter Knobel of Beth Emet The Free Synagogue in Evanston, the Rev. Doreen Olson of Evangelical Covenant Church in Chicago, Jill Pelaez Baumgaertner of Wheaton College, Jean Bethke Elshtain of the University of Chicago, the Rev. Joy Rogers of St. James Cathedral in Chicago, and the Rev. Patrick L. Daymond of Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church in Chicago.
