North Central's ensembles explore sounds of music

Contact: Nancy Dunker, associate director of public relations, 630-637-5306 Jan. 28, 2010--North Central College presents "Explore the Sound II," a concert on Feb. 23 that brings together several of the College's choral and instrumental ensembles. The ensembles will perform in every possible location-from the side balconies, aisles, sound chambers, side stairways, loft, stage and more-in the College's acoustically perfect Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville. "Explore the Sound II" follows last year's highly successful concert and will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are $5/adults and $3/students and senior citizens; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469). The lineup of performances includes the College's new Cardinal Chorus, conducted by Jacqueline Schutt; Concert Choir, led by visiting conductor Jon Warfel; String Ensemble directed by Mara Gallagher; Flute Choir directed by Marie Bennett; and solo saxophonist Lawrence Van Oyen and percussionist Benjamin Wahlund. The host performance group is the Women's Chorale with the Chamber Singers, conducted by Ramona Wis and accompanied by Barbara Vanderwall. The repertoire will feature two double choir pieces, "Echo Song" by Orlando di Lasso and "Come, All Musicians, Come" by Hans Leo Hassler, a piece for solo saxophone titled "Improvisation 3" by Ryo Noda, "Lamentations of Jeremiah" by Z. Randall Stroope, "Voice Dance II" by Greg Jasperse, "Heilig" by Mendelssohn, and several other choral pieces with percussion, flute and string accompaniment. North Central College is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and offers undergraduate programs of study in music, jazz studies and music education in choral and instrumental. Students take a combination of core music classes, private lessons, ensembles and other classes suited to their area of specialization or interest.
