John Stanley—North Central College assistant professor of speech communication, assistant director of forensics and director of individual events—was honored recently with the Dennis-Ross Award for Outstanding Coach Educator.

The annual award was presented at the State of Illinois Championship Tournament for both speech and debate, held Feb. 28-March 1. The Dennis-Ross Award is administered by the Illinois Intercollegiate Forensics Association (IIFA), which hosts the tournament.

The granters of the awards are not other coaches or judges, but students who actually receive feedback from coaches and judges. Students are not allowed to vote for their own coaches, but must select an honoree not affiliated with their institution. This award is based purely on how much educational growth students experienced due to feedback from a specific person.

The Dennis-Ross Award was created in the mid-1990s to honor two Illinois who were renowned for their mentorship of student speakers through face-to-face and ballot-based feedback.

Stanley joined North Central’s faculty in 1999. He received his B.S. from Central Missouri State University and his M.A. from Eastern Illinois University.
