Laurel White ’10 has won a highly competitive Dunn Fellowship for 2010-2011. The fellowship provides a full salary and benefits to work for one year in the Governor of Illinois’ Press Office in Springfield, IL. Top students from around the country apply and fewer than 20 fellowships are awarded each year.
“I’m sure the Dunn Fellowship will be an excellent learning opportunity, one which wouldn’t have been possible without the encouragement and support of North Central College,” White says. “I am lucky to have had a group of excellent professors to support and encourage me throughout the application process and my entire academic career.”
An English: writing major, White was also accepted into the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and she will be deferring her enrollment for a year to serve as a Dunn Fellow. While at North Central, White explored her interest in public policy journalism by researching British impressions of the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign as a study abroad student in London. For research into the culture of political satire, she attended a taping of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” In addition, she has served as co-editor-in-chief of The Chronicle.
