Mike Deger retired from a 46-year career at Block Electric in Niles, IL. He began that career at age 12 by sweeping floors and cleaning the outside grounds, and when he left he was chief executive officer/executive vice president. Deger attended North Central, 1991-2000, earning his degree to help fulfill that role. The Science and Math Excellence Network has been one of his passions and he’s served as a board member since 1998. The organization helps underprivileged children in Chicago so they have the same opportunities in math and science education as suburban children. Three years ago, he was among 11 electrical contractors, distributors and manufacturers in the Chicago electrical construction industry that started the Chicago Electrical Industry Community Outreach. Its mission is to raise money for cancer victims and research.
This year, the organization grew to 26 companies and raised more than $280,000 at the American Cancer Society Walk & Roll in April. Deger and his wife Bonnie are readying their retirement home in a small lake community in South Carolina, not far from Augusta, GA.
