Some 700 student-athletes, coaches and faculty mentors met in the Res/Center Center Sept. 12 for North Central’s annual celebration, The Huddle, to kick off the new year.
President Hal Wilde and Director of Athletics Jim Miller were the first to speak and reflected on last year’s successes and how to balance athletic and academic success.
After the traditional NC Influence T-shirts were distributed and coaches and faculty mentors were introduced, guest speaker Sue Enquist addressed the enthusiastic crowd. Enquist is a former head softball coach at UCLA and winner of 11 national championships, the most in the history of softball.
She challenged student-athletes to be positive in their speech, to love the game whether the game is good to them or not, and to practice the toe test—as soon as their feet hit the floor each day, they need to resolve to make the best they can of each new day. She also challenged them to spend 30 minutes more each day on their sport and 30 minutes more on their school work and see what happens.
