Jamie has simple advice for anyone who’s interested in organizational communication.
“Figure out what direction you want to go,” she says. “There are so many options within the field—internal or external communication, technical or creative, visual or verbal. When students have an idea of what their ideal career is, they can pursue appropriate minors, activities and internships.”
Jamie wants to work as a marketing coordinator for a Chicago-based firm. To prepare, she worked in North Central’s Office of Marketing and Communications, took on a prominent role in the College’s American Marketing Association chapter and completed and presented research about survey design for the College’s Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research.
Whenever she has a question about her options for making herself more marketable, she knows where to turn.
“The speech communication department is a great resource,” says Jamie, who started receiving job offers before she graduated. “I know even in the future I can come back and ask my professors for career advice. They’ve always been very friendly and helpful—just a great group of individuals.”
