Students, alums interact with political science professor at national conventions

Sep 07, 2012

North Central College political science professor Stephen Maynard Caliendo shared his expertise with students, alumni and the press during the Republican and Democratic national conventions.

Caliendo traveled to Tampa, Fla., last week for the Republican convention—adjusting his itinerary just as everyone else affected by Hurricane Isaac had to. This week, Caliendo met up with North Central College alumni, then he and “Race Appeal” co-author Charlton Mcilwain worked with high school students through the Junior State of America program who attended the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C.

The Chronicle of Higher Education took notice. In a piece about political science professors Tweeting from the convention, the Chronicle said it was watching Caliendo’s feed along with those of professors from the University of Virginia, Ohio State University, University of California at Berkeley, Duke University and others.

On Sept. 7, Caliendo conducted a seven-minute interview about President Obama’s acceptance speech with WDCB-FM 90.9, the College of DuPage student-run radio station.
