Meet filmmakers, view and discuss documentary “Granito”
Nov 06, 2012
On Nov. 8, the campus community is invited to view the 2011 documentary “Granito,” a North Central College Global Human Rights event, co-sponsored by the Office of International Programs, Cultural Events and the Leadership, Ethics & Values program. The free event takes place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in Smith Hall at Old Main.
Filmmakers Paco de Onis and Pamela Yates will be present for the screening and will introduce and discuss their film, a story of destinies joined by Guatemala’s past. “Granito: How to Nail a Dictator” tells the extraordinary story of how a film, aiding a new generation of human rights activists, became a granito—a tiny grain of sand—that helped tip the scales of justice. The documentary was an Official Selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Also, North Central is teaming up with ThinkGlobalArts foundation in Naperville to present the award-winning documentary, “Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai,” at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall. The film is the story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights and defend democracy.
