Trombonist and acclaimed North Central College jazz faculty member Joel Adams will perform Feb. 8 in the College’s Madden Theatre.
“An Evening with Jazz Trombonist Joel Adams” begins at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in the College’s Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave.
Adams will be joined onstage by other members of North Central College’s jazz faculty, which includes trumpeter Art Davis, pianist Chris White, bassist Jim Cox and drummer Jack Mouse.
A native of Madison, Wis., Adams is a winner of the prestigious International Trombone Association’s Frank Rosolino Jazz Award. He co-leads and composes for the touring ensemble B3 Bombers and has worked for many years with Clyde Stubblefield, a drummer best known for his work with James Brown.
Adams earned a degree from the University of North Texas, where he met and performed with fellow B3 Bombers members Dan Trudell and Pat Mallinger. Several of Adams’ compositions appear on the compilation, “The B3 Bombers Featuring Clyde Stubblefield: Live at The Green Mill.”
Adams has played with The Dallas Jazz Orchestra, through which he earned a coveted Dallas Jazz Society Scholarship. He later toured with Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd and has performed with Joe Williams, Clark Terry and Dizzy Gillespie.
Locally, he has performed with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble with Jon Faddis and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, as well as with Doug Lawrence, Jimmy Heath and Arturo Sandoval. Adams leads and composes for the Chicago Yestet, whose current CD “Jazz Is Politics?” features many of his compositions. He’s also a freelance illustrator and enjoys incorporating images of jazz instruments into his drawings.
