Gregory Wolf, Louis Waldmeir ’13 publish two essays in German journal

Gregory H. Wolf, North Central College professor of German and Dennis and Jean Bauman Professor of the Humanities, and German major Louis Waldmeir ’13 co-published two essays in the journal “Communications from the International Brecht Society.”

Wolf and Waldmeir published a review of German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s 1928 musical, “The Threepenny Opera,” which was directed by Kelly Howe, North Central College assistant professor of theatre, and performed at the College by its theatre and music departments in May 2012. The play’s social critique of capitalism remains controversial even today. Included in the article is an interview with Howe.

Also, Waldmeir and Wolf published a review of Brecht’s “Fear and Misery of the Third Reich,” directed and adapted by Farrokh Asadi and performed at Northeastern Illinois University in September and October 2012. Brecht’s series of 24 interconnected playlets describe events that took place in German households in the 1930s, dramatizing the experiences by ordinary German, and particularly Jewish, citizens as the power of Hitler grew.

The two publications are found in “Communications from the International Brecht Society” 41 (2012) 117-122 and 132-135.

Waldmeir is a College Scholar with a minor in history of ideas. After graduation in June 2013, he plans to pursue his interests in German language and culture studies.

Wolf joined North Central College’s faculty in 2005. He earned his B.A. from The University of the South and his M.A. and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.
