Experience Japanese culture during Japanese Spring Festival

May 02, 2013

North Central College’s Japan Club and Japanese program will present their Japanese Spring Festival from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, in the Harold and Eva White Activities Center. The event is free.

The annual festival takes place in May, which is the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month in the United States. In Japan, it’s the time to celebrate Children’s Day (May 5) and enjoy a weeklong vacation called Golden Week and spring weather.

Visitors to North Central’s May 6 festival will experience Japanese culture through hands-on activities, such as folding paper, Japanese calligraphy, traditional children’s games, video games, sampling of contemporary Japanese music and more. Also, Japanese foods will be available to sample; free to those with a North Central ID and $2 to the public. Japanese music will be performed with Koto (zither) and Shakuhachi (Japanese recorder) and various martial arts, including Aikido and Kendo (swordmanship) will be demonstrated.
