Amanda Marek is the 2013 Outstanding Senior Woman

Amanda Marek, a North Central College senior and resident of Bridgeview, was named the College’s Outstanding Senior Woman, the highest award presented to a member of the Class of 2013.

North Central College recognized Marek during its annual Honors Convocation on May 14 for her success in the classroom, her involvement and contributions to the campus community outside the classroom, and her future potential.

Marek, daughter of Steven and Patricia Marek, has a double major in management and in entrepreneurship and small business management. Also at the Convocation, she received the Outstanding Student in the Economics and Business Division Award. Last year, Marek earned the 2012 Outstanding Major in Management Award.

“From my perspective as an educator, a mentor, a father and a friend, there’s no doubt in my mind that none are more deserving of this award than Amanda Marek,” said one nominator. Another noted, “Her work ethic is impeccable and her leadership skills are outstanding.”

On campus, Marek has been an active leader and speaker at regional and national competitions for Enactus (formerly SIFE), a student organization with a community outreach component that teaches people of all ages about business ethics, entrepreneurship, operating in global markets, financial literacy and personal success skills. Her work in Enactus took her to Guatemala to work on a film project about the impact entrepreneurial businesses have on the country’s economy.

She also presented her academic research on the 2008 financial crisis during the College’s 2013 Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research.

A student-athlete all four years, Marek competed on the women’s cross country and track and field teams and was a national qualifier in both sports. An Academic All-American, she was chosen captain of both teams her junior and senior years.

In addition to her extensive on-campus involvement that included tutoring and service work as well as part-time work, Marek maintained a high GPA and dedication to her classes, which her professors noticed.

“In every class, Amanda went beyond just being a good student,” another nominator said. “She was among the most articulate and insightful students in class discussions I’ve had in my 30 years of teaching.”

After she graduates in June, Marek will work as a transportation intermodal representative for CH Robinson Worldwide, the largest third-party logistics company in North America. She will continue to train for triathlons and other running races.
