Carl Monk earns Outstanding Major in History Award

Carl Monk, son of Colin and Katy Monk of Morris, Ill., was awarded the James Henry Breasted 1890 Outstanding Major in History Award during Honors Day May 14 at North Central College. The award recognizes the outstanding student majoring in history.

A senior, Carl is majoring in History at North Central College. He is a graduate of Morris Community High School. He will pursue graduate studies in early American history and serve as a teaching assistant at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee in the fall.

In 2011, Carl received a Richter Independent Study Fellowship from North Central, enabling him to conduct research while studying abroad at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. A College Scholar Honors Student, Carl served as a preceptor in his history classes and his name regularly appeared on the Dean’s List.

Carl presented his academic research in an oral presentation titled “James Madison’s Scottish Enlightenment Education: Common Sense, Experimentation and Reason Shape America” during the College’s 2013 Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research.
