Derek Sanderson earns Outstanding Major in Sport Management Award

Derek Sanderson, son of Randy and Toni Sanderson of Richmond Heights, Mo., was awarded the Outstanding Major in Sport Management Award during Honors Day May 14 at North Central College.

A junior, Derek is majoring in management and sport management at North Central College. He is a graduate of Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School.

Among the four internships Derek secured, he worked as a summer intern in 2011 with the Chicago Blackhawks marketing department and was profiled in Blackhawks Daily, the team’s newsletter. He secured his internship with the Blackhawks hockey team through INROADS, an organization that helps prepare minority students for corporate and community leadership.

He was among members of the College’s Sport Management Association who were selected to serve as volunteer ambassadors at the 2013 Super Bowl in New Orleans, gaining opportunities to network and rub shoulders with football stars and professionals in their field.

On campus, Derek was voted president of the Student Governing Association and served on various several College committees, including the Inauguration Committee for North Central’s new president. Derek’s name has regularly appeared on the Dean’s List.
