Summer research students to discuss scholarly work during Aug. 1 poster session

Jul 29, 2013

North Central College students will discuss their scholarly work Aug. 1 during the poster session of the 2013 Summer Undergraduate Research Colloquium (SURC).

The SURC poster session takes place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 in Smith Hall of Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St. (The session previously was scheduled to take place in Heininger Auditorium at the Larrance Academic Center). Most of the 40 students who participated in the 2013 SURC will be present.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Colloquium is an annual eight-week opportunity for North Central College students to participate in hands-on research on campus, working one-on-one with faculty and collaborating with other students.

Posters will be presented by students who have conducted research with faculty over the summer on a variety of disciplines.

“The colloquium allows student researchers who are collaborating with faculty a chance to practice talking about their research and to hear about research from other fields as well as the opportunity to socialize with other students on campus doing research,” says chemistry professor Nancy Peterson, coordinator of undergraduate research. “Additionally, faculty members discover how well their students understand the research and learn about the research and interests of their colleagues in different fields.”

Undergraduate research has long been a priority and integral part of a North Central education, resulting in increased numbers of students pursuing independent and collaborative scholarship with faculty in a wide variety of academic fields.

Student participants in the 2013 SURC are Jesse Adamson, Eva Allen, Cameron Bechard, Mary Blaha, Scott Blaszak, Adeline Boetcher, Savannah Bowles, Sean Brady, Bryan Cardwell, Christina Carstens, Colin Loeffler, Amy Damitz, Alex Deeter, Michelle DePasquale, Joel Di Bernardo, Brian Failing, Samantha Gleaves, Allison Grossman, David Guest, Christian Horst, Nicole Jakobsze, Dan Kalny, Adam Kleinman, Raymond Koenig, Daisy Lauriano, Jamie Mangiameli, Andrew McCarey, Gianna Medina, Miguel Purgimon, Ethan Rath, Kathryn Reese, Tommy Ross, Katie Slaby, Kristen Soforic, Michael Suchomel, Eric Swanson, Kori Sye, Kelsey VandenBerg and Sergio Vargas.
