Former U.S. senator shares political experiences

Sep 16, 2013

North Central College welcomes former U.S. Senator Alan J. Dixon to campus to give a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in the College’s Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St.

Dixon’s elected political career spanned 43 years, from 1950 to 1993, serving as a Democrat in the Illinois House of Representatives, the Illinois State Senate, as state treasurer and secretary of state, and finally as a U.S. senator.

He will share experiences from his new book, “The Gentleman from Illinois: Stories from Forty Years of Elective Public Service.” His book gives an insider’s account of Illinois politics in the second half of the 20th century, with candid stories about the events he participated in and witnessed and the people he encountered—including Mayor Richard J. Daley, Adlai Stevenson, Paul Simon and presidents of the United States.

Anderson’s Bookshops will have copies of his book available for purchase at the end of his talk. This free event is hosted by the President’s Office and North Central’s Cultural Events program.
