G.I. Jobs magazine rates North Central College a 2014 Military Friendly School.
The 2014 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students. This is the third consecutive year North Central College has earned the recognition.
“North Central College has a long history of being a veterans-friendly school,” Laurie Hamen, North Central College’s vice president for enrollment management, athletics and student affairs, told a group of student-veterans during a welcoming reception Sept. 13 at the College. “Your being here enhances the educational experience for all students.”
Among its military-friendly initiatives, North Central College provides a veteran services program funded by an Aurora Foundation grant that enables the College to designate student-veteran peer leaders who help build camaraderie among veterans and help the College understand and serve their needs.
During the welcoming reception coordinated by Renard Jackson, director of outreach and program development, a letter from Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn was read.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank North Central College for hosting this event and recognize every veteran in attendance,” Quinn said in the letter.
G.I. Jobs surveys student veterans and uses the feedback to provide prospective military students with insight into the student veteran experience at a particular institution based on peer reviews from current students.
North Central College provides financial and other benefits to student-veterans, including:
- Scholarships and tuition discounts offered to military students and veterans
- Military students called to active service can resume education upon return without penalty
- Scholarships and/or tuition discounts offered to dependents of active service members
North Central fully participates in both the Post 9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon veteran benefit programs. Veterans eligible for 100 percent of the Post 9/11 benefit, based on Department of Veteran Affairs guidelines, will also qualify for Yellow Ribbon, ensuring that 100 percent of their tuition is covered.
