Guest political scientist to give talk on immigration and American democracy

Sep 27, 2013

North Central College will host a free lecture titled “Immigration Reform in the Age of Criminalization” by Robert Koulish, Ph.D.—political scientist, author and professor—at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in North Central’s Smith Hall at Old Main.

Koulish will discuss his recent book, “Immigration and American Democracy: Subverting the Rule of Law,” a provocative and detailed inspection of the political policies involved in America’s immigration issue. It focuses on the conflict between America’s commitment to democracy and its immigration policies, which Koulish refers to as “abysmal failures in democratic process.”

Author of numerous peer review and law review articles regarding American immigration policy, Koulish is director of undergraduate studies at University of Maryland, College Park Department of Government and Politics, where he is also visiting associate professor and senior research fellow at the Center of American Politics and Citizenship (CAPC) and director of the university’s newly created law and society minor. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

His current research focuses on the localization and criminalization of immigration control through the Department of Homeland Security initiative called ICE ACCESS. He’s coediting a book on Crimmigration law, to be published by Springer Press, and writing a book on political ideology. He’s also an avid op/ed writer.
