Oesterle Library will present a free screening and discussion of the film “A Prince Among Slaves” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the library’s Dr. Lora L. Tyson Education Curriculum Resource Center. The documentary is a true story of Abdul Rahman Sori, an African prince who was enslaved in the American South in the late 1780s.
The discussion following the film will be led by William Barnett, associate professor of history, and Perry Hamalis, Cecelia Schneller Mueller Professor of Religion, associate professor of religious studies and director of academic opportunities. The program also features resources in the library’s Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys.
Oesterle Library is one of 840 libraries and state humanities councils across the country selected to receive the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. The collection aims to familiarize public audiences in the United States with the people, places, history, faith and cultures of Muslims in the United States and around the world.
