Wynard presents session about teaching techniques at national conference

Tammy Wynard, North Central College visiting instructor of health and physical education and coordinator of the health education and wellness programs, presented at the annual American School Health Association conference in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Oct. 10-12. The conference brought together professionals working in higher education, K-12 school teachers and nurses, as well as community health education professionals.
 
Wynard’s session, titled “A Buffet of Teaching Techniques for the Higher Education School Health Professional,” provided updated and newly created higher education techniques specific to the disciplines of Community and School Health Education. She shared unique and innovative learning strategies she uses in her courses at North Central to teach about Healthy People 2020, Developmental Assets, the Dimensions of Wellness, the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, Coordinated School Health Programs and Comprehensive School Health Education.

Teaching activities for children and youth-based health education are prolific, but the sharing of higher education techniques happens less often within the discipline and her session helped close that gap. At the conclusion of the session others were encouraged to apply to present at the national level with their higher education pedagogical approaches at upcoming conferences or in manuscript form.

Wynard joined North Central’s faculty in 2011. She earned a B.S. in community health education/speech communications from Illinois State University and an M.S. in school and college health education from Indiana University.
