Higher education group publishes article about North Central College global learning initiative
Nov 19, 2013
The group Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education has published an article highlighting a North Central College global learning initiative.
The article, “Civic Learning on a Global Scale: The Middle East as a Learning Lab,” is authored by Whitney Roberts ’08, M ’13, assistant director of ministry and service.
Roberts describes an immersion experience the Office of Ministry and Service offered last year to students who participated in a study abroad course in Israel and Palestine.
“Our goal was fairly straightforward: expose students to historically significant land, along with the narratives of Israelis and Palestinians living within the modern ethnic, religious and political tensions. We wanted an experience that was both spiritually engaging and intellectually challenging to our student’s understanding of justice, peace and conflict,” Roberts writes.
Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, formerly known as the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), selected North Central to participate in a Lead Initiative with other institutions that value strong commitments to civic learning and democratic engagement.
