North Central among top 4 percent in accepted proposals at NCUR
Jan 22, 2014
North Central College will send a record 44 students to the prestigious National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) April 3-5 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Forty proposals submitted by these students were accepted for presentation.
Some 460 academic institutions of higher learning will participate in the 2014 NCUR gathering of young scholars. With 40 accepted undergraduate presentations, the most ever in College history, North Central College places in the top 4 percent of the nation and the most accepted proposals of any college or university in Illinois.
“This extraordinary achievement for North Central’s students and their faculty mentors reflects our growing culture of inquiry and the College’s strategic goals to establish and achieve markers of excellence, including the increased numbers of undergraduate researchers,” says Nancy Peterson, North Central College’s director of undergraduate research and professor of chemistry.
The research projects will be presented by students from some 33 different academic fields, ranging from biochemistry to French to education to human resource management and more. “The Spanish Economic Crisis,” “Dark Matter Wakes,” “Protein Aggregation” and “The Fabric of Humanity” are just a few of the exciting and diverse topics that will be presented. Nine of the student research projects were funded by North Central’s Richter Independent Study Fellowships and 12 are honors theses in the College Scholars Honors Program.
