Regan publishes poetry book “Gapers Delay”

Matthias Regan, North Central College visiting assistant professor of English, published a poetry book titled “Gapers Delay.”

Working in the tradition of populist modernism—what William Carlos Williams called “the American Grain”—Regan imagined poems as essays “improvised” along the principles of spontaneous composition (the “variable foot,” “composition by field”). As essays, they adhere to a multitude of popular expository genres: the oration, the rant, textual exegesis, the rap, the soliloquy and dialogue, the curse. Among contemporary writers, he drew inspiration in equal parts from Rae Armantrout, Amiri Baraka, Kamu Brathwaite, Bob Perelman and Robert Pinsky.

Regan, a faculty member at North Central since 2010, earned his B.A. from Connecticut College, his M.A. from Boston University and his Ph.D. from The University of Chicago.
