May 28, 2014

Ann Durkin Keating, Dr. C. Frederick Toenniges Professor of History at North Central College, was recognized this spring by the DuPage County Historical Society for her scholarship in the field of urban history.

Keating has published a number of scholarly texts and is highly regarded for her co-editorship of the seminal “Encyclopedia of Chicago,” which contains a vast amount of information on DuPage County and its communities.

In addition to her publishing efforts, Keating regularly delivers presentations on the history of the Chicago area to a variety of audiences. In May, she spoke at the Schaumburg Township District Library as part of a program on the settling of the township. Keating discussed how language and ethnicity differences had to be negotiated between the Yankee and German farmers, in the early decades just after the 1832 Black Hawk War between the United States and Native Americans.

Keating, a faculty member at North Central since 1991, earned her B.A. from the University of Illinois and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
