The Addison Independent newspaper has published photographs and an article about a summer school program staffed by North Central College education students.
The front-page coverage in the July 3 issue describes how North Central’s education majors gain valuable experience teaching high-need students. This is the fifth year the program has been offered free to children who attend Addison School District 4, an education partner of North Central College.
The program is supported by a $4,800 grant from the DuPage Community Foundation.
Since 2010 the enrichment program has served hundreds of students identified as needing help in literacy and math. This year, 90 children are attending reading, writing and mathematics courses taught by North Central College students, who benefit from the field experience of planning and teaching lessons.
The students volunteer to participate in the program and may earn credit toward internship requirements. Participants include Heidi Nelson of Carol Stream, pictured, a junior pursuing majors in elementary education and Spanish with endorsements in English language learning and bilingual instruction.
The program is coordinated by Lincoln teachers Kim Heupel and Kate Pereda, a 2005 alumna of North Central College.
