Carballo gives talk at CIC/Walmart Foundation Symposium

Julie Carballo, North Central College director of First Generation Programs and Teach First, was a presenter at the Council of Independent Colleges(CIC)/Walmart Foundation Symposium on First-Generation College Students held July 7-9 in Baltimore.

Representatives from 50 colleges and universities that received CIC/Walmart College Success Awards attended the symposium to share lessons learned, challenges overcome, and successes achieved by their institutions’ programs for first-generation students.

Carballo was invited to talk about North Central’s Teach First program, which was started in 2008 with a grant from the Walmart Foundation and is now partially supported by a grant from the Dunham Fund of Aurora. Her presentation was part of a session titled “Integrating Career Development with the Student Experience” with colleagues from Saint Augustine’s University and Woodbury University. She also was a facilitator at a breakfast table discussion.

Carballo joined North Central College in 1997. She earned her B.A. from Loras College, an M.Ed. from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an M.A. from Governors State University.
