Sep 26, 2014
Student broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1, North Central College’s student-run radio station, have earned nominations in state and national competitions.
In a state competition, four students earned two nominations in two different categories in the annual Student Silver Dome Awards presented each fall by the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) to the top college and university radio and TV programs in the state.
The four-person team of broadcast communication majors and June graduates earned a nomination in the Best Radio Station Newscast category for their newscast titled “February Original Reporting.” The nominees are Kristin Gitchell of Villa Park, Kelsey King of Winfield, Kevin Jackman of Glenview and Jeremy Rushing of Moline. Gitchell and King also received a nomination in the Best Radio Public Service Announcement for “Don’t Text and Drive.” IBA award winners will be announced at a luncheon ceremony Oct. 10 at Loyola University in Chicago.
Gitchell, King, Jackman and Rushing also earned a nomination in the Best Radio Newscast category in the 2014 National Student Production Awards presented by College Broadcasters, Inc. (CBI). Winners will be announced at CBI’s National Student Electronic Media Convention in Seattle on Oct. 24.
WONC is among the most honored collegiate radio stations in America and has won national and state awards in commercial and collegiate competitions. The station has won 20 Marconi College Radio Awards; no other college or university radio station in the country has won more.
