Kirk’s composition is featured on CD and radio program
Jan 23, 2015
Jonathon Kirk, North Central College assistant professor of music, is a featured composer on “Metal Cicadas,” a new CD by the contemporary string group Duo XXI. The CD by Albany Records is titled after Kirk’s composition of the same name.
Kirk is one of seven commissioned composers on the CD; his work is performed by Anna Cromwell on violin and Mira Frisch on cello. The group Duo XXI is committed to developing the musical culture of the 21st century through commissioning, performing and recording new music.
Kirk’s piece, “Metal Cicadas,” was presented and discussed on the WFMT-FM 98.7 broadcast “Relevant Tones.” Click here to listen to the program and his piece, which opens the program and is featured at the 18-minute mark. The work is inspired by Kirk’s field recordings of the 2008 emergence of the 17-year magicicada in eastern North America.
