Sheridan coauthors journal article about engaging students using social media

Aug 31, 2015

Brandon Sheridan, North Central College assistant professor of economics, published an article in the May 2015 issue of International Review of Economics Education, which is “an international peer-reviewed journal that promotes research into effective learning and teaching in economics in higher education.” His coauthors are Dr. Abdullah Al-Bahrani and Dr. Darshak Patel.

The article, titled “Engaging students using social media: The students’ perspective,” looks at student surveys across three institutions—including North Central College—to see how students use social media and gauge their attitude toward its use inside/outside the classroom.

The results indicate students are most likely to connect with faculty via social media when it’s a one-way connection; whereby, students can view faculty information but faculty cannot view students’ information. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are the most popular platforms with students, indicating these are possible channels that can be used to extend the classroom. The journal article is available through subscription or interlibrary loan.
