Mar 07, 2016

North Central College has reached an important marker in the construction of its new Science Center: The steel structure is near completion. To commemorate this important milestone, the College has planned a Topping-Out Celebration on March 14. “Topping out” is a term used by ironworkers to signal the final piece of steel is being hoisted into place on a large building under construction.

Students, faculty, staff, members of the Board of Trustees, the community and neighbors are invited to this celebration starting at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 14, at the Science Center site at the corner of S. Loomis Street and E. Van Buren Avenue.

It’s customary for the last beam to be painted white and signed by all the construction workers and people involved in the building. From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., celebration attendees are invited to sign the steel beam and enjoy complimentary refreshments. President Troy D. Hammond will speak at 12:30 p.m. and the ceremonial final beam will be hoisted into place.
