Gerald Gems, North Central College professor of health and physical education, has a published piece in a new book, written in Italian and English. An interview Gems conducted with Umberto Mucci, a journalist for the Italian newspaper L'Opinione delle Liberta, that was published last fall has been included in the 2016 book by Mucci, titled “We the Italians. Two flags, One heart.” Mucci’s book is a selection of the best 100 interviews conducted for his online platform wetheitalians.com. Gem’s interview was based on his own book, “Sport and the Shaping of Italian American Identity.”

Gems has coedited a book, titled “Global Scholar, Global Spirit,” with Annette Hofmann of Ludwigsburg University in Germany and Susanna Hedenborg of Malmo University, Sweden. It was published by Total Health Publications in Oslo, Norway.

Gems also coedited two special issues for the International Journal of the History of Sport: “Games and Sporting Events in History - Organisations, Performances and Impacts” (2014) and “Global Perspectives on Sport and Physical Cultures” (2015), both with Annette Hofmann of Ludwigsburg University and Maureen Smith of California State University, Sacramento.

His essay titled “Sport and the Italian American Quest for Whiteness” was reprinted as a chapter in “Sociological Perspectives on Sport: The Games Outside the Games” (New York: Routledge, 2015) by editors David Karen and Robert E. Washington.

In late December, Gems gave two presentations titled “Physical Education and Sports in the United States” at Ludwigsberg University in Germany, and he chaired a keynote session at the International Ski Conference at the Austrian Ski Academy in St. Christoph, Austria.
