UPDATE: Tax Bill

Dec 21, 2017

Dear North Central College Campus Community:

A few weeks ago I wrote to you regarding a number of provisions contained within the pending Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that would have been detrimental to colleges and universities throughout the country, including North Central College.  In our recently finalized Strategic Plan, our community reaffirmed a long held position: “We value the development of the intellectual, the physical, and the spiritual human being. To that end, we encourage engaged civil discourse and dialogue on disparate viewpoints.” While there were many view points regarding the tax bill, it was my responsibility to inform you of the bill’s potential consequences for North Central College; I would now like to share with you the outcomes from the final bill.

I am pleased to say to you that most of the harmful provisions were removed from the final bill as a result of the many advocacy efforts undertaken. To those of you who took the time to participate in civil dialogue regarding the tax bill and communicate with your elected officials, thank you.

There was particularly good news regarding graduate student tuition remission and college employee tuition remission benefits, which were retained in the final bill. The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) has prepared a more complete breakdown of the key higher education provisions in the final agreement: Tax Cuts and Jobs Act 2017 Breakdown (.PDF)

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season, and thank you for your commitment to North Central College.

Best regards,

Dr. Troy D. Hammond
