Cardinal Career Launch: Student Highlight

Laurel Murphy, Class of 2022

Career Launch:

Laurel Murphy is heading to Simmons University in Boston to obtain a master’s degree in Library and Information Science with a concentration in Cultural Preservation and Archives Management. She wants to use her education and her Chinese language skills to work for an international library or publishing company, perhaps while living abroad.

Laurel decided to study history when she transferred to North Central as a junior. “It was like a lightbulb went off in my head. I’m so happy I was able to pair these two majors together because they complement each other so well. Studying history helped me develop useful research and analytical skills, while East Asian studies allowed me to see the world from many different perspectives.”

The North Central College Advantage:

Laurel took full advantage of her opportunities at North Central College. She was a part of the history club, Chinese club, and two honors societies. She became a delegate for a student-led conference that cultivates mutual trust and exchange between the Republic of Korea and the United States.

She presented research at the College’s Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research and at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research. She helped with the Startalk Chinese language program on campus.

“The faculty and staff at North Central were amazing. As a transfer student, I was only at North Central for two years. And then due to the pandemic, I was only physically on campus for two semesters. But I always felt a strong sense of community thanks to my wonderful professors."
