The Center for Financial Literacy

Empowering Individuals to Make Healthy Financial Decisions

At North Central College, part of our mission is to prepare you to be an informed citizen and leader. That means knowing not only what you want to do with your life, but also with your financial resources.

Understand your Personal Finances

Regardless of what your major is or what you plan to pursue after college, you need to understand how to manage your personal finances. The goal of the Center for Financial Literacy is to break down the barriers so you feel comfortable talking about money and can equip yourself for life in the real world.

What you'll learn

As part of the Center’s workshops, you’ll learn about budgeting, saving, debt management and planning for retirement. Financial experts will give detailed presentations on everything from how to approach investing decisions to what to consider when you want to buy a house. The Center will be a place to turn to for answers to any financial question, giving you the tools to take control of your own financial education—and future.

Serving the Community

You’ll also have the chance to share what you’ve learned with the community as part of the Financial Literacy Club student organization, which is open to students in any major.

What Opportunities does the Club offer?

  • Assist in the planning and organizing of the Financial Literacy Speaker Series
  • Host workshops for teachers from grades K-12 on creating activity-based economic lesson plans
  • Participate in economic and financial literacy events at local high schools
  • Research and write on personal financial topics with the Center’s director
  • Work with other groups on campus to provide personal financial education to fellow students
  • Make connections with similarly minded students, alumni and community members.

Meghan Sly

Working with the Center for Financial Literacy has been one of my favorite experiences at North Central College. I have gained so much experience and knowledge in personal finance. I also have been able to help people in the community to learn about their financial opportunities. Becoming financially literate is crucial for a college student and the Center is phenomenal at helping with this.
