Our jazz artist-instructors are among Chicago's finest
North Central offers world-class performing facilities and a jazz faculty comprising some of the most prolific and accomplished artists in the Chicago area. The North Central College Big Band rehearses three hours per week and utilizes the standard big band instrumentation. Repertoire includes compositions and arrangements from the libraries of well-known professional big bands, including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, Gil Evans and many others.
Jazz Combos
Multiple Ensembles and Instructors
The Jazz Combos focus on improvisation within a small jazz ensemble setting. These groups are instructed by members of North Central College's esteemed jazz faculty and rehearse three hours each week. The repertoire spans the entire spectrum of jazz styles, from traditional jazz, bebop, fusion and Latin jazz to contemporary jazz and free improvisation.
Vocal Jazz Ensemble

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble focuses on improvisation within a vocal ensemble context. The ensemble rehearses three hours each week and performs settings of both instrumental and vocal jazz repertoire. Many of the arrangements and compositions are written by its director, jazz vocalist Janice Borla.
