Holiday Conversations that Matter: Talking Career Over Turkey
Nov 18, 2025
Between the mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie, Thanksgiving can also be a perfect time for meaningful, career-related conversations. For many students, fall semester can bring new perspectives on what they want from college and beyond. The Thanksgiving holiday break is a chance to pause, reflect, and reconnect.
As a parent or family member, you do not need to have all the answers. The most important thing is to be curious and encouraging toward your student. Even a short chat can help your student think more intentionally about their goals, interests, and next steps. We encourage you to try asking open-ended questions that invite reflection rather than pressure.
Here are some questions about reflection and growth:
- What is something you have learned about yourself this semester?
- What are you most proud of accomplishing this semester?
- Which class or project has challenged you the most in a good way?
- Who is someone on campus who has made a difference for you this fall?
Here are some questions about connection and direction:
- Have any of your classes or activities made you think about future careers?
- What is one thing you would like to explore next semester? (Examples: as an internship, a club, or a new course)
- How are you feeling about balancing everything, including school, work, friends, and hobbies?
These conversations do not have to be formal. They can happen in the car, while setting the table, or during a walk with the dog. The key is to listen and celebrate your student’s growth, even if their path still feels uncertain.
If your student is eager to keep exploring, encourage them to connect with the Center for Career and Professional Development for help with career exploration, resumes & cover letters, and internship/job searching.
