Your Student's Mental and Physical Health

Mental Health

Many students come to college with a pre-existing mental or physical health diagnosis. Some have not yet received a diagnosis and/or the appropriate care, resulting in ongoing struggle. Thankfully, stigma associated with mental health struggles has reduced significantly over the years, removing barriers to students seeking the professional help that they need. The Dyson Wellness Center staff are particularly passionate about working with your student, supporting their health throughout their college experience. Their health matters. It impacts their GPA and overall learning, their work success and their relationship to themselves and others.

The Dyson Wellness Center is an integrated health center that provides CONFIDENTIAL medical, counseling and interpersonal violence support services and health education to the campus community. The Dyson staff believe in sharing important heath information to help students make informed choices. Remind your that they can visit the DWC Hub page to see a detailed description of serviceseligibility and to meet our team.  Your student can request an appointment online on the website, call or stop by to schedule in-person or telehealth appointments. The Center is open Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

If you have an emergency concern, please call 911 and Campus Safety at 63-637-5911.

If you have a concern about your student’s well-being, you can inform the College through a form here that enables staff at the College to reach out to your student to offer support and connect them to on and off campus resources.

Physical Health

There’s no shortage of need for repetition about ways to prevent illness. Please remind your student to wash their hands, refrain from sharing utensils, towels and bedding and to wipe frequently touched surfaces. When they maintain hydration, eat nutritious foods and move their bodies regularly, they will stabilize their mood and experience more focus and energy. While we’ve surpassed the flu vaccine clinics already at this point in the semester, students can still get a flu vaccine at most pharmacies.

Belonging & Connection

Part of the human dynamic is that we need one another. When your student feels connected to others on campus, they can experience a boost in immune system and self-confidence. Connection with others can help uplift students to take action like showing up to class, going to an event and having fun with fellow classmates. While we understand that students have very busy lives – school, sport, work, family, organizations – we also know that connecting with others on campus is a powerful way for your student to feel good.

Students can find upcoming events in a weekly newsletter from the Office of Student Engagement and Belonging (OSEB@noctrl.edu) in their NC email. Those digital newsletters highlight upcoming events and share a link where students can see all that’s happening on campus. Here’s the web address of that link: https://noctrl.presence.io/events/cal
