Professor Chod discussed possible vice president picks for Democratic candidate Joe Biden

North Central College’s Suzanne Chod, associate professor of political science, discussed the growing speculation about the possible vice president pick for Democratic candidate Joe Biden on WGN. While the former vice president has been vetting potential contenders, some of the names that have been mentioned are senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren, as well as former Georgia state representative and gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and even Illinois senator Tammy Duckworth.

“It has been interesting to watch all this unfold with the VP pick,” said Chod. “Before some of the most recent events, there has been a lot of discussion about the certain characteristic that Biden would be looking for in a female VP. Now is the time for the party to take a stand and say this is who we are, and this is the direction we are going. One of the important aspects of that is showing that different types of people who haven’t had access to a representation in the highest levels of office, it’s time for them to have that representation—it’s a good role model effect, it shows what the party values, it can mobilize different groups of voters, and in some ways makes them think differently about Joe Biden by increasing his popularity and increase his chances to win.”
