Simple Career Steps for the Winter Break

Nov 18, 2025

As the semester wraps up and students head home for a well-deserved break, winter can be a perfect time to prepare for the spring months ahead. In between the family gatherings and relaxation, a few small steps can help your student feel confident and ready for spring semester opportunities. Encourage your student to use this time to make progress on their career goals and take action in simple, manageable ways. Here are a few ideas you can share or even do together:

1. Refresh their resume and LinkedIn profile

Encourage your student to review their accomplishments from the semester. Updating these materials now will make applying for spring or summer internships much easier later.

2. Explore internships and job openings on Handshake

Many employers post opportunities early in the year for the upcoming summer. Students who start browsing over break often find great options before the semester fills up with other commitments.

3. Reach out and reconnect

Winter break is a natural time to network. Suggest that your student check in with professors, supervisors, or mentors, or reach out to alumni and family friends in fields of interest. A short message can open doors to valuable insights and connections.

4. Research career paths and graduate programs

Suggest that your student research career paths or graduate programs that align with their interests and goals. The insights they gain now can guide their decisions in the coming semester.

Remind your student that the Center for Career and Professional Development is here to help them take the next step, whether that means exploring a major, applying for internships, or preparing for life after graduation. A little momentum over break can make a big difference when spring semester begins.
