Gustav Mahler's beautiful Symphony 4 is the centerpiece of this concert, telling the story of a child's dream of heaven. Unlike Mahler's other symphonies, the music is innocent and joyful, with lovely melodies and only fleeting shadows. In the last movement, soprano Elizabeth Norman joins the orchestra to represent the child, singing "No worldly tumult is to be heard in heaven, all live in greatest peace, we lead angelic lives, yet have a merry time of it besides" as a feast is prepared. The concert also features a performance by the 2027 winner of our annual solo competition for high school students.
