Profile Picture

Dr. Katherine C. Heller is an Associate Professor of Mathematics, co-advisor of Pi Mu Epsilon and winner of the 2014 Clarence F. Dissinger Award for distinguished teaching and mentoring by a junior faculty member.

Katherine grew up in South Carolina and, after earning a B.S. in mathematics from the University of South Carolina, received her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Virginia in August 2010. She is passionate about teaching and, while attending UVa, was honored to be featured in the article ``High Anxiety: Mathematics grad student Katherine Heller's passion for teaching helps students overcome their fears'' for A&S Online Magazine. She was a 2010-2011 Project NExT  (New Experiences in Teaching) fellow.

With an interest in math outreach, Katherine has also been involved in several Girls and Math Summer Programs at North Central College (2013, 2014, 2015), Temple University (2012), Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA (2009), and the University of Virginia (2006, 2007, 2008). Girls and Math is a week-long mathematics camp for girls in grades 5th through 8th. The program allows talented and enthusiastic middle school girls from the local area to explore several aspects of mathematics not covered by the traditional school curriculum. In addition, Katherine served as co-director for the North Central Math Circle for talented high school students (2013, 2014, 2015).
